About

GIS, data, and automation specialist with a geoscience backbone

I’m Matthew, a spatial specialist based in Melbourne. I like keeping spatial systems dependable across rail networks, tailings work, and field telemetry.

My throughline. I started in geology, learned the discipline of data governance, and now operate as a GIS/data engineer who can span requirements, build, QA, docs, and handover. I focus on translating between engineers, analysts, and executives so everyone can see the same picture.

Industries. Rail, state government, local government, mining/tailings, plus consulting. Context switching is normal for me; data is data, spatial is spatial.

Professional essentials
  • ArcGIS Enterprise/Online, Experience Builder, AGOL → Enterprise transitions
  • FME Flow/Form automation with QA, logging, and governance
  • SQL Server spatial, Power BI, and integrations across Azure/AWS/on-prem
  • Metadata, data dictionaries, schema standards, and handover packs

How I work

Principles
  • Outcome-first: start with the decision or workflow that needs to change.
  • Small increments: ship working slices quickly, then harden.
  • Observability: logs, validation, and alerts baked in.
  • Documentation: runbooks, data lineage, and training so teams are independent.
Collaboration style

Clear, calm, and transparent. I facilitate workshops, capture requirements, and write concise updates for technical and non-technical stakeholders. I’m happy leading, pairing, or supporting in-house teams.
